Japan providing USD 5.1m for waste management

The Japanese government to provide Maldives with a grant aid of 700 million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 5.1) for waste management.

On Monday, Maldives and Japan signed the Exchange of Notes to enable the grant to implement a project relating to enhancing the Maldives’ waste management capabilities.

While Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel signed the Exchange of Notes, on behalf of Japan, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of House of Representatives, Takei Shunsuke signed, during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.

According to the Foreign Ministry, this grant aid will enhance sustainable waste management capabilities in Maldives. This includes the provision of waste management equipment and vehicles for the islands.

Speaking at the ceremony State Minister Khaleel highlighted the generosity of the Japanese government and expressed gratitude for the grant aid.

Additionally, he emphasised the close and friendly relations that exist between the two countries. He went on to mention that such projects reflect Japan’s continued role as one of the key partners in the developmental journey of Maldives. 

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Technology Khadeeja Naseem, the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori, and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology and Ministry of Finance, as well as the Embassy of Japan.
