Man who claimed was carrying an explosive remanded for seven days

The man arrested after claiming to be carrying an explosive in his bag has been remanded in custody for seven days by the Criminal Court.

It was a 38-year-old Maldivian man who was arrested on Friday night from Hulhumale’ after claiming to be carrying an explosive. His remand was extended on Saturday.

Police said that a concerned citizen reported on Friday night that a man at Hulhumale’ Beach Club was claiming to be carrying an explosive in his bag. They added that the case was under further investigation.

No explosives were discovered upon searching him.

In September, a Maldivian married couple was arrested from Gan International Airport in Addu City after they claimed to be carrying a bomb. No such item was found in their luggage during a search, hence, were released from custody shortly after.

Such threats are investigated as serious terror crimes.
