Mission for Migrant Workers Maldives (MMWM) is raising funds to support dozens of migrant workers affected by the deadly fire in a building in Maafannu district of Male’ City that killed 10 people.
The fire broke out in a car repair garage in M. Nirufehi, located near the Maaveyo Mosque, around 12:30 am Thursday. The garage is located on the ground floor, while the first-floor housed cramped accommodation for migrant workers.
The accommodation housed migrant workers from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
MMWM, a migrant rights NGO, said Friday they were raising funds for a period of 48 hours to support the 33 affected migrant workers registered in the accommodation as identified by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
According to MMWM, sum of the money raised will be evenly distributed amongst the migrant workers - of which 14 are displaced and will be given to the next of kin of the 10 deceased migrant workers.
MMWM asked for donations to help the migrant workers affected in Maldives’ most tragic fire incident in recent history.
The NGO asked for people interested in making donations to transfer the money to their bank accounts in the Bank of Maldives (BML) and share the payment receipt via Viber of WhatsApp to their number +9607384994.

According to MMWM, they received MVR 69,193.83 and USD 588 in donations within the first 12 hours.
The donations close at 00:00 hours Sunday, November 13.
The 10 migrant workers killed in the fire include seven Indians – four males and three females, and two Bangladeshis – a male and a female.
The 10th body, a male, has yet to be identified.
Maldives Police Service is coordinating efforts with the Maldivian Foreign Ministry and the Indian High Commission and the Bangladesh High Commission to transport the bodies of the victims back home to their families.
