Public event held to mark UN Day concludes as a huge success

The public event by the United Nations’ (UN) office in the Maldives on Friday to mark the 77^th United Nations Day concluded as a huge success.

The event held from 4:30pm to 7:00pm at Dharubaaruge, Rannabandeyri Maalam, saw the participation of many members of the public, including children and youth. Immigrants from different countries residing in the Maldives also attended the event.

Eight stalls in the event were from eight foreign consulates in the Maldives; Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Maldives, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and the UK. UN agencies operating in the Maldives also had stalls.

Speaking regarding the event to Sun, Huda Adam from UN Resident Coordinator Office for the Maldives described the event as a huge success.

“We believe this event to be a successful fair. Many people attended. Especially children. Saw huge support from them for activities organized for them,” she had said.

Ambassadors from some of the participating countries also spoke to Sun regarding the event.

In this regard, the Ambassador of China to the Maldives Wang Lixin said that the event was a great opportunity to showcase China’s culture and heritage to the public. She expressed gratitude for organizing such an event.

“A very successful event. We shared much information regarding China through our stall. It is heartwarming to see such an event after a long time,” she had said.

High Commissioner of UK to the Maldives Caron Rohsler underscored it was a great opportunity after the COVID-19 pandemic to share information regarding the undertakings of the United Nations.

“It is so heartwarming to see so many people here,” she added.

UN Day is marked annually on October 24, to raise awareness of the goals and achievements of the organization and to gain support for their work. The specific date was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.

The event was organized in collaboration with Foreign Ministry.
