Parliament Speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed has returned to the Maldives after concluding his official visit to Washington, USA.
Nasheed visited the US to attend the ninth meeting of Finance Ministers of Climate Vulnerable 20 Countries (V20) which was held during the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. He returned to the Maldives after concluding the trip on Saturday.
At a parliamentary sitting held on October 12, Nasheed talked regarding his visit - stressing the extreme fluctuations in the economies of developing nations at present, which IMF needs to be made aware of.
"As the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) believes, close to 20 countries will face economic crises and may even end up in sovereign default in the coming two years," he had said.
He has said that CVF has had talks with IMF and is working on solutions to the abovementioned issues. The expenses of this visit were borne by CVF.
CVF is an international forum held especially for countries that are at severe risk due to climate change. This forum includes 55 member countries from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific - representing 1.4 billion people.
After concluding this visit to the US, Nasheed also visited neighboring Sri Lanka and met with the President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe.
He has not disclosed any further details regarding this meeting.
Nasheed has been recently appointed to coordinate foreign aid to help with Sri Lanka's economic crisis and as the international climate advisor for Sri Lanka by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
