NDMA: Wave surges damaged six houses in Dhigurah

ADh. Dhigurah sustained damages in tidal surges on October 13, 2022.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday revealed that the wave surges experienced by Adh. Dhigurah on October 12 caused damages of various degrees to six houses.

The authority revealed that while six households currently used for residence sustained damages, none of the families needed to be moved.

Further detailing, NDMA said that mostly household items were damaged and that they mostly received reports regarding the harbor area of the island.

Additionally, NDMA stated that they were still working on gathering information regarding the damages.

Notably, Dhigurah is not on the list of islands that frequently experience wave surges. This was the first the island had surges in the past ten years.

Dhigurah Council’s vice president Ibrahim Abdul Raheem told Sun the tidal surges began around 01:30 am that night.

“Wave after wave continued to sweep shore until around 04:00 am,” he said.

Ibrahim described it as the biggest tidal surge the island has experienced in the past 50 years.

Maldives Meteorological Service has predicted that Maldives is going through a period of bad weather. Hence, both the authority and NDMA warned to be cautious of it.

During the most recent period of rough weather, over 20 houses were damaged due to wave surges. Some families even needed relocation from their homes due to the extent of damages.
