Former president, PPM’s leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom on Friday stated that China’s consistent friendship and understanding is a powerful display of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Maldives.

He made the remark in a message to China’s President Xi Jinping on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and China.

In his message, Yameen said that China has stood by Maldives as an integral partner in development over the past 50 years – having committed to key development projects over the past five decades in enhancing the socio-economic development of the Maldives.

“I also avail myself to reaffirm our commitment to the One-China policy, and reassure our ardent belief that China should be unconditionally granted its rights to protect its people and its territory from foreign influence,” he added.

Yameen also expressed hope for stronger relations between China and Maldives, and further cooperation in pursing areas of interest.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and China Xi’s also exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and China.

President Solih’s message stated that China is among the Maldives’ most important bilateral partners. Meanwhile, Xi’s message stated that China-Maldives relations have set a good example of countries of different sizes treating each other as equals and seeking win-win cooperation.

The three biggest projects under Maldives-China partnership were launched during Yameen’s administration; the development of the Velana International Airport, construction of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge (known locally as Sinamale’ Bridge), and the Hiyaa Housing Project.
