President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday said that access to timely and affordable mental health services must be a guaranteed right for all.
He made the statement in his tweet on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.
The president called on the entire society to approach the issue and to increase commitment to creating more awareness.
“I call for a whole-of-society approach to bolster our commitment to raise awareness and make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority.”
World Mental Health Day is marked annually on October 10.
As we mark this day, the number of people seeking treatment for various mental illnesses has increased in Maldives.
Currently, IGMH is the only institution with a dedicated center providing treatment for mental illnesses.
However, with the number of people seeking treatment increasing, people have to wait on lengthy waiting lists for long periods of time, waiting their turn to consult.
