Criminal Court rejects ex-journo Naseer’s case

Criminal Court has rejected former journalist Abdulla Naseer Ahmed’s case – who is charged by the prosecution with engaging in homosexuality.

Naseer was arrested on suspicions of engaging in homosexuality on July 29 following a leaked video on social media. He remained in custody over the case for approximately a month before the police released him after requesting the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) to press charges against him.

Sun has learned that Criminal Court’s Registrar decided against accepting Naseer’s case citing nonfulfillment of some basic requirements.

PG Office has appealed the Registrar’s decision to Criminal Court’s Judges Council. However, Sun has been informed that the review was requested after the deadline specified by law.

A string of videos showing men engage in homosexual relations has been leaked on social media since late June.

The subject of many of the videos, Alamgiri, who admitted to engaging in sexual acts with multiple men, including several high-profile Maldivians, was found guilty and sentenced to seven months in prison in August.

The videos leaked online show Alamgir engaging in sexual relations with Nazim Sattar, former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed), Sergeant Abdul Rahman Rafeeu, a senior police officer from the Drug Enforcement Department (DED), teachers and muezzins.

Whilst both Nasheed and Rahman have been charged and await trial – Nazim Sattar’s case concluded on Thursday. He was found guilty of engaging in homosexuality following admission to crime, and was sentenced to three months and 26 days in home confinement in place of a jail sentence.
