Minister Hussain: Development headed Nolhivaranfaru’s way with establishment of water system

Fisheries Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, on Wednesday, has stated that development is head HDh. Nolhivaranfaru’s way, following the inauguration of safe drinking water service on the island under the newly developed water system.

The special ceremony held at Nolhivaranfaru to commence the service was officiated by the Fisheries Minister. Environment Minister Aishath Shauna, Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Ahmed Saeed Mohamed and Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla also attended the ceremony.

Operation of the water system at Nolhivaranfaru was contracted to Fenaka Corporation.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of safe drinking water service on the island, Fisheries Minister Hussain stated that it was a blessing.

He added that the establishment of the water system at Nolhivaranfaru will pave way for development, including the commencement of local tourism on the island.

“The opportunities opened at present for residents of this island are endless. Development is headed to this island’s way now,” he had said.

Dr. Hussain underscored that the most common cause of death across the globe within the past 100 years was the lack of access to clean drinking water. He stressed that many have passed away from diseases arising from drinking contaminated water.

He also requested residents to be mindful of two things whilst making use of the newly established water system; to avoid wasting water, and to drink tap water instead of bottled water.

Emphasizing that water is a pricey blessing, Dr. Hussain said that many forget its true value once they have access to water at cheap prices.

“Although a small amount of money is incurred to purchase water, it is something of great value. Sixty percent of the human body is water. It is something we cannot live without,” he had said.

Environment Minister Shauna who also spoke at the ceremony underscored the importance of providing water service to the people in a sustainable manner, whilst maintaining the system properly. On this note, she revealed plans to conduct a program to train staff on the maintenance of water systems.

“My hope is that youths from this island join Fenaka and enroll in these courses,” she added.

In her remarks, Minister Shauna stressed that one of the biggest problems faced in the Maldives was with respect to waste management. With reference to the fact, she said she hoped the establishment of a safe drinking water system at Nolhivaranfaru will decrease the dependency of the island’s residents on bottled water which could decrease the amount of waste produced.
