Education Ministry to commence literacy project

The Ministry of Education revealed plans to commence a literacy project to teach the entire country how to read and write.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry said that starting from now for a year, a project to teach reading and writing to those between 18-5 years will be conducted.

The statement also noted that the project will be carried out by the Institute of Education with the city council and atoll councils.

Additionally, islands that achieved full literacy will be identified and a special certification is to be given starting this year.

“In declaring as an island that erased illiteracy, and to remain as an island that achieved 100 percent literacy, certain conditions need to be met.”

Moreover, the statement said that as part of celebrating International Literacy Day marked on September 8, a book donation programme will be held.

“The purpose of this is to create a love for books, habituate reading and provide a way to read.”

One of the most significant events held in schools for Literacy Day is commencing the reading programme that is formulated to achieve the goals of the National Literacy and Mathematics Strategy.

The statement requested schools that are newly starting reading programmes to design theirs in a way that meets these goals as well.
