Maldives felts tremors on Monday morning as a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Indonesia.
There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.
The earthquake hit 198 kilometers from Padang City, West Sumatra, at 08:29 am Maldivian time.
It is approximately 2,854 kilometers away from Male’ City.
An official from Maldives Meteorological Service confirmed to Sun that tremors from the earthquake were felt in Maldives, and were picked up by the service’s sensors in HDh. Hanimaadhoo and L. Kadhdhoo.
However, there is no threat of a tsunami to Maldives, said the official.
Indonesia’s meteorological service has also stated there is no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.
Tremors from the earthquake shook buildings in Male’ City, prompting evacuations.
A magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Sumatra in 2004 had created a tsunami, killing over 200,000 people in communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean, including Maldives.
