Amendment put forth to retain 87 parliamentarians

An amendment has been put forth to the constitution in order to retain the number of Parliamentians to 87.

The amendment was by Maamigili Mp and leader of Jumhoory Party Qasim Ibrahim.

It called the constitution to recognize the number of constitutuencies as 87, and that a single representative must be elected from each to the Parliament.

MP Qasim went on to note that with each passing election, the number of parliamentiarians have been increasing, which as per him would have economical impacts among others. He added that this would not prove to be sustainable for a country like Maldives.

The current Parliament in Maldives, which is the 19th Parliament consists of 87 members. In contrast, the one elected in 2014 has 85, while the one in 2009 had only 77 members.

The amendment was previously submitted in the last session of the Parliament. Moroevr, even before in 2013, an amendment was submitted to cap the number of Parliamentarians elected.
