Solar powered streetlights have been installed at Sh. Maaungoodhoo through support of Bank of Maldives’ (BML) Community Fund - which focuses on empowering individuals to contribute to society through sustainable community projects.
Under this project, 24 streetlights were installed along the main roads of the island. The project was implemented by non-governmental organization based at the island, Maaungoodhoo Youth Linkage.
Commenting on the project, a member of Maaungoodhoo Youth Linkage Mohaed Zahir said that absence of streetlight in the area and the community posed many difficulties.
“We hope that with the installation of solar powered streetlights, we can make the island a safe space for our community and make a difference to the environment by reducing our dependence on non-renewable energy,” he added.
BML’s Community Fund is a program that aims to empower individuals and NGOs to contribute to their communities through sustainable projects. So far, the bank has provided financial assistance for over 60 projects across the country through the program.
