Parliament approves salary increment for magistrates, special allowance for CC judges

Parliament, on Thursday, has approved a salary increment for magistrates and the issuance of special allowance for Criminal Court judges.

The motion submitted by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) proposing a salary increment for magistrates was reviewed by the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.

Following their review, the Committee approved a salary increment for magistrates as Finance Ministry had confirmed that JSC’s budget can be increased for the purpose. Their report was presented to the floor today.

Along with one amendment – the Committee’s report was passed at today’s parliamentary sitting with the unanimous votes of 55 members in attendance.

It was Public Accounts Committee that a reviewed a motion submitted by the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) – requesting a special allowance for Criminal Court judges for a period of four months as efforts to clear the Court’s backlog are underway,

The Committee, following their review, had decided that Criminal Court judges working on unofficial days to hear cases that are one-year-old or longer be issued an allowance of MVR 500 per day.

This decision was passed at today’s parliamentary sitting by the unanimous votes of 57 parliamentarians in attendance.
