Parliament speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed has departed on a visit to Sri Lanka.
Parliament, in a statement on Saturday, said Nasheed was travelling to Sri Lanka at the invitation of the country’s prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
No details regarding the visit have been disclosed.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in its recent history, after the long border closure during the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted tourism and led to a shortage in foreign currency, leaving the country unable to import essential products such as food and medicine.
Wickremesinghe accepted Nasheed’s offer and appointed him to coordinate foreign aid to the country last May.
The economic situation in Sri Lanka has sparked protests, demanding the resignation of the country’s president, Goatabaya Rajapaksa.
