Parliament, on Tuesday, has approved the appointment of Aishath Shaan Shakir as the new Maldivian Ambassador to Germany.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s request to have the current Maldivian Ambassador to Germany, Ahmed Latheef – who had been serving in the position since 2019 - return to Maldives, and be replaced by Shaan, was reviewed by Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The President did not specify a reason for the request in his letter.

Following their review, the Committee had concluded they approved the appointment of Shaan to the post.

Their report cited that Shaan had worked in the international relations field in different capacities over a long period of time – having attained relevant education as well. Citing these reasons, the Committee deemed Shaan a competent individual for the post in terms of education and experience. They also green-lighted her appointment without an interview.

In the vote taken at today’s parliamentary session on whether or not to approve Shaan’s appointment as the new Maldivian Ambassador to Germany – she received approval with the unanimous votes of 29 members who took part in the vote.

Shaan is currently serving as the Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Ministry. Prior to the appointment in 2020, she served as Maldivian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

She also previously held the positions of Joint Secretary at the Foreign Ministry, Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia, and Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and other top positions at the Foreign Ministry.
