Leader of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom states he is a member of MRM alone, and does not endorse candidates from any other political party.
In a statement on Thursday evening, Maumoon said that some politicians had been making false claims in meetings with members of the general public as well as his own supporters that he now backed their political party.
Maumoon said that such false were completely false, even if came from someone close to him, or someone who had worked together with in politics.
“Such claims, even if it comes from someone close to me or someone who had previously worked with me, are completely baseless and false claims,” he said.
Maumoon’s daughter, Dunya Maumoon had reportedly been claiming that he now backed Maldives National Party (MNP), during visits to islands.
Maumoon’s statement appears to come in response to his daughter’s claims.
Maumoon described MRM as ‘a party of hope’, founded to achieve the reforms the people desire.
He said that MRM’s principles were a path drawn to uphold maintain the internal stability Maldives previously enjoyed and the independence and sovereignty of the country, and built a prosperous and peaceful tomorrow with innovative ideas.
Maumoon said that MRM was the only political party which held the principles, the discipline, and the vision he believed in.
