Case of ex-president Yameen being threatened sent to 241 Committee

The case of opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom being threatened through a video has been submitted to the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee).

On behalf of the opposition coalition, the case was submitted to the Committee by Guraidhoo MP Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.

The letter addressed to the parliament speaker by MP Ghassan read that the video states Yameen would be attacked. It also underscored that although a case had been filed with Maldives Police Service regarding the video, no indication of whether an investigation was launched has been given.

Citing these reasons – it was requested in the letter that the 241 Committee probes the case, including an inquiry into how security forces handled the case.

A social media movement under the name ‘Maldives Youth Force’ had commenced earlier this week. In the first video publicized from the account made under the name – a man claims that Yameen would be ‘put to his place’. It was stressed in the video that this was a peaceful movement initiated by the youth.

On Tuesday evening, participants of the movement had protested in front of Yameen’s private residence, H. Dhoovehi.
