Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain has spoken out against the allegations of corruption levied against her husband, South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil.
Hisaan took to Twitter on Tuesday night to address the allegations of theft and corruption against Nazil.
Hisaan tweeted that Nazil wasn’t involved in any government project.
“Nazil isn’t someone who has taken any government contract during this administration. Neither is he someone who has submitted a bid in response to any government announcement,” she said.
She linked the allegations to the upcoming MDP elections to select a chairperson.
Hisaan said that ‘it isn’t the most beneficial for MDP’ to accuse people who didn’t support North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) as the next chairperson as thieves.
“It’s not the most beneficial for MDP to accuse anyone who doesn’t support Inthi of being thieves and of being corrupt,” she said.
Inthi is running for chairpersonship of MDP against Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail.
The election is also seen as a competition between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP leader and Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed. Fayyaz is believed to be backed by the President, while Inthi is believed to be backed by Nasheed.
It has created a rift within MDP, with increased exchange of words between the two factions as the election approaches.
Amid the heightened tensions, Deputy Speaker, North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla announced on Tuesday evening that Nasheed will be contesting the upcoming presidential elections.
