Leader of the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former president Mohamed Nasheed urged the government on Monday to clampdown on corruption, stressing that the government would gain trust by investigating the MMPRC and the ventilator corruption scandals.
In a tweet on Monday evening, Nasheed, who serves as speaker of Parliament, said that MDP, and he himself had always had simple demands; that no government should be corrupt, discriminate, or cruel.
“Investigating the MMPRC case and the ventilator case are things that will gain trust,” he said.
Nasheed has repeatedly urged the government to expedite investigations and take action against corrupt public officials.
He has said that the failure to investigate the MMPRC case – the biggest corruption scandal in recent Maldivian history – would mean the failure of the state itself.
He has also said he did not wish for MDP to stand by a government that stole from the public.
Nasheed has said he refused to back down in the ventilator case – which took place in 2020 during the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
