Emergency motion over contractors fleecing Hiyaa tenants rejected

An emergency motion submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday morning urging authorities to address the issue of contractors who took money from tenants of the Hiyaa housing units to complete finishing work, but failed to deliver, has been rejected.

The motion was submitted by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar, the deputy leader of opposition People’s National Congress (PNC).

The motion was rejected with a vote of 29-6.

The Hiyaa housing units, located in Hulhumale' Phase II, were developed under a state social housing project.

Adam Shareef, in his emergency motion, said that following instructions by authorities to move into the units in three months, Hiyaa tenants rushed to hire contractors to complete the finishing work on the units by taking loans.

He noted that some of the contractors had yet to finish, or even begin finishing work despite being paid.

“Because on the increase in parties fleecing people in the name of companies that do finishing work,” said Adam Shareef, explaining the reason for the emergency motion.

Adam Shareef said that some contractors were refusing to return the money, despite their failure to conduct the work.
