Parliament rejects motion to give health insurance for ex-MP's families

The Parliament on Tuesday kicked out the motion proposing to provide health insurance to the families of former Parliamentarians.

The motion proposes to put former parliamentarian’s spouses and children under 18-years on a health insurance scheme where the ex-MPs pay the premium themselves.

After studying the motion, the Parliament’s General Purpose Committee Chair MP Hassan Latheef read presented the committee’s final report.

While the Parliamentary representative of Inguraidhoo constituency MP Hassan Ahmed opposed granting insurance to the families of former members, it was backed by MP for Velidhoo Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeg.

The majority of the members who debated on the motion spoke against it, and 26 members voted as such. Only two members voted in favour of such a scheme.
