Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Monday announced an additional COVID-19 related fatality in Maldives.

As per the agency, the deceased was an 80-year-old Maldivian male who was admitted to the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility. He passed away at 12:15 am.

“This is the 292nd COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet.

Moreover, it marks the 15th death so far in February.

The highest COVID-19 deaths in a single month were recorded during the Delta wave in May last year. Maldives recorded 89 deaths in May 2021, including 13 deaths in a single day.

Maldives was hit by a surge in COVID-19 cases in January, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. The numbers have since begun to come down.

To date, a total of 165,073 cases have been confirmed, out of which 149,734 made full recoveries. There are 15,035 active cases, with 24 of those patients seeking hospitalized care.
