The Embassy of China in the Maldives has stated that the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center established at Hulhumale’ Hospital brings hope to local people with vision impairments.
Of the stories of China-Maldives relations being told by the Embassy on Twitter as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Maldives – today’s highlight was the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center established at Hulhumale’ Hospital which opened on January 13, 2020.

The Center was developed with donations from the Chinese government exceeding over MVR 11.1 million to include medical equipment, medicine and medical consumables.
The Embassy stressed in their tweet that the Centre brings hope to local people with vision impairments.
The Center offers sophisticated ophthalmic services and treatment for complicated eye conditions.
As per the Embassy, a total of 160 patients are examined at the Centre per day. Meanwhile, one surgery is conducted in 7 minutes on average. The Center also boasts hundreds of surgeries without a single complication.
The Embassy also said that besides offering ophthalmic services and treatment, the Center also facilitates training opportunities for local doctors, nurses and other health professionals in ophthalmic services.
In a video uploaded by the Embassy, Dr. Chen Weirong from China’s Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center who heads the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center said that their aim is to leave a permanent and modern ophthalmology center for the Maldivian people.
“Our aim this time is to leave a permanent ophthalmology center for the Maldivian people; a modern ophthalmology center. Besides leaving behind equipment and instruments, we are training local staff. Talents are very important,” she had said.
