21-year-old COVID-19 patient admitted at HMF passes away; second death today

A COVID-19 admitted at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility (HMF) has passed away.

This is the second COVID-19 fatality recorded today.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the identity of the latest COVID-19 fatality as a 21-year-old Maldivian man. He passed away at 3:40pm this afternoon.

His death increases the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the Maldives to 283.

The first COVID-19 death recorded today was that of a 75-year-old Maldivian woman who was being treated at HMF. She passed away at 1:42pm this afternoon.

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant.

Within the last 24 hours, HPA confirmed 1,589 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases in Maldives to 148,580.     

Meanwhile, 1,686 patients made full recoveries within the past 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 130,649.    

With these new developments, Maldives now has 17,637 active cases - of which 52 patients are hospitalized.

Maldives has recorded a total of 18 COVID-19 deaths so far into this year; out of which nine were recorded this month.
