In 2021, Family Court registered 2,399 marriages, 1,192 divorces

Annual statistics released by Family Court shows the court registered 2,399 marriages and nearly half as many divorces last year. 

The Family Court registered 2,399 marriages and 1,192 divorces. 

Therefore, the court registered an average of six marriages and three divorces per day. 

In a country notorious for its high divorce rate, the 1,192 divorces last year was the lowest number of divorces to be registered with the court in recent history. 

Family Court had registered 2,984 divorces in 2020, and over 3,000 divorces in the nine years before. 

Maldives has the highest divorce rate in the world, with 10.97 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants per year. Its double the divorce rate of Belarus which ranks second.
