Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll rises to 270

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Sunday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.   

HPA identified the deceased as a 42-year-old Maldivian female.   

She passed away at 03:01 am on Sunday.  

She was being treated at the ICU of the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility. 

“This is the 270th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet.     

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. Health experts expect the cases to peak by the end of January or begining of Februrary.

Maldives has 114,977 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 2,349 new cases recorded on Saturday. 101,660 patients have since recovered.       

The country currently has 13,035 active cases. 48 of the patients are hospitalized, seven of them in the ICU.
