Fish filleting platform established at Maalhendhoo with BML’s assistance opens

Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced the opening of a fish filleting platform established at N. Maalhendhoo with the support of the Bank’s ‘Community Fund’ program.

The fish filleting platform was developed by Maalhendhoo-based NGO, Society for Leader Initiate Development (SLIDS), with financial assistance from BML.

Opened on January 1, the fish filleting platform is designed to be used during the day and night with appropriate lighting, storage unit, clean water and with workstations for 8 people. Waste water generated at the space is directly removed through the drains and dustbins have been placed in the area.

An official from SLID stated that the project was undertaken to solve the difficulties faced by fishermen in using the jetty at the harbor to carry out the filleting especially during bad weather conditions.

“The aim of the project was to find a solution for the difficulties that our fishermen faced. For the past years, we used the jetty at the harbor to carry out the filleting even in bad weather conditions. Through this project, we hope it benefits the islanders and the local fishermen to cut and sell fish in a more convenient manner. Our sincere gratitude and thanks goes to Bank of Maldives for their financial support to implement this important project,” the official had said.

For the opening ceremony of the fish filleting platform – SLID also hosted a fish cutting contest amongst the men and the women at Maalhendhoo.

Since the introduction of Community Fund in 2019, BML has financially supported 60 sustainable projects in different areas across the country.
