Sentencing in Yameen Rasheed murder trial postponed at family’s request

Murdered blogger Yaamin Rasheed: Yaamin had campaigned for freedom of thought and speech in the Maldives.

The verdict delivery for the murder of social media activist and blogger Yameen Rasheed has been postponed upon the family’s request.

Although a hearing was scheduled to sentence the defendants after the most recent hearing, the Criminal Court stated that the date was pushed back.

A court official confirmed that this was due to a family member of Yameen being unable to attend due to health concerns.

On the hearing held on November 18, where the summary statement was read, Judge Adam Mohamed assured that a verdict will be delivered within 30 days, as dictated by the law as well.

Yameen Rasheed was brutally stabbed to death over 36 times in the stairwell of his apartment building on April 23, 2017. 

Ismail Haisham Rasheed (H. Annaarumaage, Male’ City), Hussain Ziyad (M. Kolhufushi East, Male’ City), Ahmed Zihan Ismail (M.Iraasmikge, Male’ City), Mohamed Dhifran (Simbadge, G. Dh. Gadhdhoo), Hassan Shifaz (M. Kudhehige, Male’ City), and Ismail Rasheed (M. Thaaif, Male’ City) are on trial for first-degree murder charges under Section 110 of the Penal Code.

Yameen’s family regularly attendants his trials, with members of the family being present even during the hearing where details of the attack were readout. The hearing was temporarily halted for a little while due to a family member needing to step outside to compose themselves after hearing the brutal details.
