Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom states Maldives expects the arrival of its 1.3 millionth tourist of the year on Tuesday.
In a tweet on Sunday, Mausoom noted that Maldives had achieved its target of 1 million tourist arrivals on October 29, two months in advance.
“Now #Maldives is counting the days and numbers towards the optimistic target of 1.3 million tourists,” he said.
Mausoom said Maldives was likely to cross that milestone on Tuesday, December 28.
The tourism industry of Maldives – crowned the World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards in December for the second year in the running – is rebounding faster than initially projected.
Tourist bed nights this year passed 10.7 million in December, breaking the previous record set back in 2019.
The highest number of tourist arrivals in a single day since border reopening was recorded on December 18, with 6,955 arrivals.
Maldives, which enjoyed 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2019, had recorded only 555,494 arrivals last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
