Yameen to travel to atolls for ‘India Military Out’ campaign

Opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is set to travel to the atolls to further promote the ‘India Military Out’ campaign – which was kicked off to push for the removal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives.

The opposition coalition has been holding protests and rallies – voicing concern over the fact that Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives are not leaving the country.

The coalition, on Tuesday, said that their leader, Yameen, will be departing to atolls at the end of this week, or at the beginning of next week – in order to further promote the campaign.

Opposition coalition’s Spokesperson Heena Waleed told Sun that the trip to the atolls will kick off from the islands within Kaafu Atoll, and later on to large islands and cities across the country.

“Yameen has told that the priority during this trip will be the work carried out to remove the Indian military personnel stationed in Maldives, for the purpose of defending the independence. The main purpose of the trip therefore, is to take these activities to a new level,” she had said.

Noting that Yameen has not met his supporters residing in the atolls for over two years, Heena said that the agenda of the trips also included him thanking his supporters for their efforts in freeing him.

“The most important political activity in Yameen’s view is the work carried out to remove Indian military personnel,” Heena stressed.

Speaking further, Heena said that political activities by the opposition coalition are unfolding at max since Yameen was freed – adding that Yameen has no intention of complying with any obstructions which may be imposed by the government pertaining to these activities.

Yameen has previously stated that Maldives is not a town of India, and that Indian military personnel is not required to ensure the security of this country. He has also said that Indian military personnel should not even be stationed in this country.
