Criminal Court has sentenced a man to one month in prison for kicking a police officer in the chest.

Hassan Ziyad, L. Kalaidhoo, was charged with assault after he kicked an officer of the special constabulary in the chest outside the Hulhumale’ Police Garage at approximately 01:30 pm on July 16.

Ziyad plead guilty to the charge.

Ziyad had faced two months and 12 days in prison for the crime, but the sentence was reduced in light of his confession.

Based on his confession and lack of prior criminal record, the court sentenced him to one month and 24 days in prison on Wednesday. The four days he spent in jail following his arrest was considered as time served and reduced from his sentence.

Sentences for assault varies depending on the severity of the crime.

The biggest sentence for assaulting a police officer in recent Maldivian history was the seven-year sentence issued against a man who hit an officer with a helmet during the May Day Protest in 2015.
