State Electric Company (STELCO) has completed repair work on a ward – Block 5 - at the Home for People with Special Needs in K. Guraidhoo – a project the company undertook as a CSR initiative.

Paperwork on the completion of the project and handover of the block to Gender Ministry was signed by STELCO’s Managing Director Hassan Mughnee and Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi on Tuesday morning.

The project involved retiling rooms and toilets in Block 5, and reinstalling sinks, as well as work on the kitchen.

STELCO also treated the cracks on the walls, conducted pest control, replaced fans, installed window curtains, and painted the entire block.

At Tuesday’s ceremony Minister Aishath noted that Block 5 had been unused for a long time due to the need for major repairs, and thanked STELCO for undertaking the project under CSR.

“There are currently 199 patients at the shelter. This number changes each day. There are always people who need immediate transfer there on the waitlist. Therefore, the handover of the ward means 28 additional spots. These 28 spots will change the lives of many, and ease their suffering. Perhaps that’s why this social service you rendered has such value,” she said.

STELCO’s MD Mughnee said that it was a matter of pleasure to the entire company to render the service to the shelter.

“We, being a utility company, have transformed ourself today to become a company which works to improve the quality of life of our customers. We are therefore providing assistance to the people in the community who need assistance, and especially, persons with special needs,” he said.

Mughnee said that STELCO will continue to conduct similar CSR projects.
