President: Teachers provide invaluable national service

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Tuesday that teachers and educators provide invaluable national service, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding younger generations from the adverse and detrimental influences within the society.

He made the statement in a written address on occasion of World Teacher’s Day.

In his address, President Solih said teachers play the most important role developing and building the human resources of the country.

Teachers and educators in the Maldives have undertaken a task broader than can be described with words, not only to educate children but also to protect and guide them on the path towards becoming productive members of society, he said.

President Solih extended gratitude and acknowledgement for the invaluable national service of teachers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the entire Maldives was beholden to them for their determination and diligence to ensure the education of students go uninterrupted during the pandemic.

“What teachers do is more than a job,” he said. “They sacrifice their time, energy and interests to cultivate the young minds that are the future of our nation.”

President Solih said that safeguarding younger generations from drug abuse and protecting them from exposure to religious extremist rhetoric remain two major duties of the nation as a whole.

He said that it can be achieved by ensuring that children understand and embody the holy tenets of Islam and follow healthy social etiquette.

Concluding his address, President Solih prayed to Almighty Allah to bless the efforts of teachers and educators to nurture the future generations of Maldives.
