North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has criticized the Police over their failure to make an arrest in connection to the video that had recently gone viral on social media showing a youth being roughed up by a group of people in a room of a guesthouse.

The Parliament’s Security Services Committee submitted the report formulated by them to the parliament floor -  regarding the case of Ahmed Siraj, Sweetheart, L. Kalaidhoo, who was allegedly subjected to police brutality while under custody.

Supporting the points stipulated in the report – Inthi said that the video which had recently gone viral on social media showing a youth being beaten up should also be addressed whilst speaking of such a case.

He attributed the events seen on the video to inhumane acts which only happen in places such as Guantanamo Bay.

“The video has been taped after breaking into someone’s room – a youth’s room in the form of a gang – and subsequently subjecting him to violence and stripping him naked. This is the lowest of the lowest acts of inhumanity,” he had said.

Inthi also stated that when Parliament’s Human Rights Committee had requested the police to investigate the aforementioned case – they said that the case had already been submitted to them on April 17.  He also noted that the Police had said that they have identified the perpetrators in the case – and were also working on taking statements from additional parties. Despite this – Inthi stressed that no arrest has been made over the case.

Hence, Inthi had highly criticized the Police and raised concern over the speed at which they are handling the case.

“Everyone has witnessed how the brutal attack had taken place. It is clear from letter to letter as to who are the perpetrators – in guaranteeing those involved. If the Police were taking the case seriously, there is no way that they will not know,” he had said.

Inthi further alleged that the Police were ‘purposely trying not to investigate the case’ accusing that there was some sort of influence behind it.

He also called upon the relevant authorities to speed up the investigations and take action against those necessary.
