COVID-19: Four islands placed under monitoring

Four residential islands outside the Maldivian capital have been placed under monitoring in response to COVID-19 cases. 

The four islands are; V. Thinadhoo, Sh. Kanditheem, M. Veyvah and HDh. Nolhivaram. 

Thinadhoo Council’s president Shifag Hussain told Sun on Saturday that the island was placed under monitoring after 11 out of 22 random samples taken from the island came back positive for COVID-19. 

He said that 90 percent of the eligible adult population in Thinadhoo have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose. 

It marks the third time for the island to be placed under monitoring since the current pandemic began. 

Meanwhile, Kanditheem Council’s president Ahmed Ahsan told Sun the island was placed under monitoring after an individual tested who went to the local flu clinic tested positive for COVID-19. 

“This island was placed under monitoring after one of the samples taken by the flu clinic tested positive. The individual who tested positive is a third grader,” he said. 

 It marks the second time for the island to be placed under monitoring since the current pandemic began. 

Ahsan said that 90 percent of the eligible population in Kanditheem have been fully vaccinated. 

Veyvah Council’s president Mamdhooh Waheed told Sun the island was placed under monitoring after three out of 25 samples taken in the island due to flu symptoms among residents tested positive for COVID-19. 

It marks the second time for the island to be placed under monitoring since the current pandemic began. 

Mamdhooh said that 97 percent of the eligible population in Veyvah have been fully vaccinated. 

Meanwhile, Nolhivaram councilor Niyasha Ali told Sun the island was placed under monitoring after seven people who exhibited flu symptoms tested positive for COVID-19. 

It marks the second time for the island to be placed under monitoring since the current pandemic began. 

Niyasha said that 95 percent of the eligible adult population in Nolhivaram have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.
