MDP chairperson Hassan Latheef has expressed confidence the difference of opinion between MDP leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed and incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be resolved.
In a press conference by the main ruling party on Thursday afternoon, Hassan Latheef said MDP is working on resolving the differences between Nasheed and President Solih - longtime friends and founding members of MDP.
Hassan Latheef said he has met with the President to hear his opinion regarding the subject, and has discussed them with Nasheed and sought his opinion via phone.
“I believe I have met with both leaders once now. I therefore believe this will be resolved through these efforts,” he said.
Hassan Latheef said no MDP member believes there is an issue that the two leaders cannot discuss or reach a mutual agreement on.
“Therefore, In Sha Allah, we will get this done,” he said.
Hassan Latheef’s comments come after Nasheed accused President Solih of deviating from MDP’s core principles in order to appease coalition partners and announced he can no longer stand by him in politics. Nasheed, who is in the UK recovering from injuries he sustained in an assassination attempt last May, has orchestrated a petition calling for a constitutional referendum to establish a parliamentary system in Maldives.
