Spokesperson of President’s Office Mabrook Azeez has stated that government will assist those who are unable to make the rent payment to council housing units from the government’s housing projects.
Speaking at a press conference held today, Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez stressed that the government is working hard to accommodate housing for its people. In this regard, he noted that the government will be assisting those who are unable to make rent payments to council housing units from 1000 housing projects commenced by this administration.
“From the MVR 5,500 that is to be paid as rent – the government will assist those who are unable to pay the amount as a whole or part of it through subsidizing. Not saying that the government will pay MVR 5,500 as a whole. Either the rent will be lowered or cut through subsidizing,” he had said.
Mabrook further explained that a framework to carry out this plan has not been formulated yet – but confirmed that subsidizing will be carried out within the government.
He also noted that there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled in order to qualify for the council housing units’ category.
“Families which earn an income below a certain amount or families that are living in certain conditions,” he had said.
As part of the government’s housing projects – they have contracted Apollo Holdings to construct some towers at Hulhumale’. Two kinds of housing units will be developed at these towers – being council housing units and affordable housing units which are either two or three-room apartments.
Prior to this, the government has stated that the rent of the council housing units will be between MVR 5000 and MVR 7000.
Speaking further today, Mabrook noted that the rent of the 60 two-room council housing units situated at the Apollo towers will be MVR 5,500 – whereas the rent of the 60 three-room council housing units situated at the Apollo towers will be MVR 7,000.
