President’s Office announced on Monday that Maldives has fully vaccinated 84 percent of the eligible population against COVID-19.

In a press conference on Monday afternoon, President’s Office spokesperson Mabrook Abdul Azeez said 84 percent of the eligible population above the age of 18 years have now been fully vaccinated.

“84 percent of the people above the age of 18 years in Maldives have now been vaccinated. We hope to increase this to 90 percent by the end of this month,” he said.

Mabrook said authorities are working to complete vaccination of the eligible population as soon as possible.

“In Sha Allah, the goal is for everyone eligible for vaccination in Maldives to be vaccinated soon, for the threat of Covid to be alleviated somewhat, and to facilitate economic activities,” he said.

Mabrook said that the vaccination rate in Maldives is remarkable by international standards.

Maldives, which is in the middle of an ambitious campaign to fully vaccinate 90 percent of the eligible population in the country by the end of this August, began vaccinating children above the age of 12 years last week.

As of Saturday, 368,148 people have received their first dose and 299,077 people have been fully vaccinated.
