President to receive intel audit report this week

President’s Office states findings of the audit of intelligence agencies ordered in the wake of the assassination attempt on Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed will be presented to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih this week.

President’s Office spokesperson Mabrook Azeez told Sun on Sunday afternoon that the office will release detailed information regarding the report at a later date.

A homemade remote-controlled IED was strapped to motorcycle parked nearby Nasheed’s residence, and was detonated at 08:27 pm on May 6, just as Nasheed, 54, exited his residence and went to get in his car. Nasheed was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.

The attack on Nasheed, who is provided the highest level of security due to the continuous threats against him, raised questions as to whether the attack took place due to an intelligence failure – from both the police and military.

The questions prompted the President to order an audit on national intelligence mechanisms to identify weaknesses and remedy them in order to prevent future attacks.

The attack on May 6 also prompted an inquiry by the Parliament’s Security Services Committee.

Nasheed’s supporters have accused the government of failure to implement the committee’s recommendations.

However, Mabrook denied the allegations and stated that authorities are implementing the recommendations on the inquiry report.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Maldivian people.
