A Qatar Airways flight that departed from Velana International Airport (VIA) has shortly made an emergency landing back at the airport after a window had shattered mid-air.
At this time, Sun can confirm that the window shattered in Qatar Airways’ flight number QR677 which departed from VIA around 19:45 this evening, and was enroute to Qatar’s capital Doha.
Following the emergency landing of the flight at VIA, the airport has been brought to ‘alert’ status. No passenger was injured during the accident and all passengers have been safely evacuated from the aircraft.
At present, the flight has been parked at an allocated area of the airport – where relevant authorities are and professionals are attending to the matter.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 shows that the flight had changed its course back to Maldives after leaving the Maldivian airspace. The flight is a Boeing 777 – the world’s largest twinjet.
Sun has not been able to get a statement from the operator of VIA, Maldives Airports Company Limited regarding the incident at this moment.
It has not yet been disclosed as to how the window had shattered.
