Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has requested for his younger brother Nazim Sattar to be appointed his lawyer.
In a letter to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Nasheed noted that Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem told the press that his statement was vital for the prosecution of the suspects arrested for the IED attack on him on May 6, and said he wished for a lawyer to be appointed to represent him.
He requested for his younger brother and leading lawyer, Nazim Sattar to be appointed his lawyer.
Nazim told Sun on Thursday morning that he prefers not to make a comment regarding the case at this point. He said that Nasheed has yet to tell him whether he will provide his statement to the police or not.
“A decision has yet to be made regarding whether he will provide his statement for the investigation,” said Nazim.
Prosecutor General’s Office filed charges against four of the 10 suspects arrested in connection to the case with the Criminal Court last Tuesday. This includes Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, 26, Hiyaa, V. Thinadhoo – the man accused of detonating the IED.

Police had also requested charges against Ahmed Fathih, 23, Dhunfini Ufaa, L. Gan. However, PG Shameem said in a press conference on Tuesday that the evidence available is insufficient to pursue charges against Fathih at this point.
Nazim Sattar said Nasheed does not wish to make a comment regarding the handling of the case at this point.
“Any further comment will depend on the information the PG shares as the case progresses,” said Nazim Sattar.
In a press conference to announce the charges against four suspects on Tuesday, PG Shameem said investigators have yet to receive a statement from Nasheed. And that a statement from Nasheed was crucial for the prosecution.
The assassination attempt involved a homemade remote-controlled IED strapped to motorcycle parked nearby Nasheed’s residence, which was detonated at 08:27 pm on May 6, just as Nasheed exited his residence and went to get in his car. Nasheed was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.
Police said they found evidence suggesting the suspects to be ISIS sympathizers, but found no evidence directly linking them with the international terror organization.
