MDP passes Nasheed's resolution urging state of emergency

The National Council of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed the resolution submitted by the party’s Leader Mohamed Nasheed calling to declare a state of emergency in the Maldives – and to confer special powers to Maldives Police Service in order to counter terrorism and religious extremism.

Nasheed has proposed the resolution in connection to the in connection to IED attack targeting him on May 6 – calling to support the announcement a state of emergency in the Maldives and subsequently increasing the chances of police to make arrests of terrorists.

The resolution also states this is also the view of MDP.

The passage of the resolution comes after significant findings in the investigation into the May 6 attack were disclosed in a joint press conference held by the Police and the Prosecutor General’s Office on Saturday.

Police announced they have made total 10 arrests in connection to the case – including an individual believed to have played a key role in planning the attack.  Police also said there was no evidence to suggest the suspects carried out the attack in exchange for money.
