Addu City confirms second COVID-19 fatality

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Wednesday that a patient admitted to Addu Covid Management Facility has passed away, marking the second COVID-19 fatality in the southern Addu City.

HPA identified the deceased as a 91-year-old Maldivian male.

He was declared dead at 10:20 am.

“This is the 145th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” announced HPA.

Sun has been informed the deceased was a resident of Hulhudhoo district.

His death comes less than two days after Addu City confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality.

With 15 new cases on Tuesday, Addu currently has 190 active cases of COVID-19. Four of the patients are hospitalized. 561 people have been quarantined for contact with confirmed cases.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks.

This May has seen the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in Maldives, with over 60 deaths.

Maldives has 58,245 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,004 new cases recorded on Tuesday. 34,159 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 24,033 active cases. 289 of the patients are hospitalized.

With the surge in positive cases and their contacts, health authorities have abandoned tracing all contacts and decided to limit contact tracing in the greater Male’ area to high-risk contacts.

Meanwhile, new restrictions have kicked-in at the capital, and curfews have been imposed in all residential islands outside the capital placed under monitoring.
