An emergency issue has been submitted to the parliament saying that the public is not benefitting from the massive expenditure for COVID-19 by the state.
The issue was submitted to the parliament by Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed and read that the purpose was to bring the problems faced in arrangements made in atolls to the attention of the government. He noted the worsening COVID-19 situation in his constituency while he was presenting the issue.
He said that ever since the virus was first identified in the Maldives, the biggest desire of the public was to overcome the virus as soon as possible and return to normal.
He said that the public complaints regarding a lack of any benefits for the commoner has been amplified, despite the government saying that it was spending a lot to establish and resources and make arrangements to deal with the virus, from state income as well as foreign aid.
MP Saeed called on the government to take rapid measures at a time when fatalities were on the rise and more than 70 islands were under monitoring mechanisms.
The issue was accepted for debate in the parliament, and deliberations are currently underway.
A similar issue was presented to the parliament last week by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef, which was rejected.
