Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll rises to 101

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Monday that a patient admitted to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.

HPA identified the deceased as a 70-year-old Maldivian female.

She was declared dead at 06:00 pm.

“This is the 101st COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” announced HPA.

This May has seen the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in Maldives, with 24 deaths over the last two weeks.

In a press conference by Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) on Sunday, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed from the Technical Advisory Group said most of the fatalities are people with chronic illnesses and the elderly. He said that 70 percent of the fatalities were people above the age of 80 years.

He also said that most of the fatalities since Maldives began vaccinations were people who had not received even one shot of vaccine.

Maldives has 44,523 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 741 new cases recorded on Sunday. 28,459 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 15,666 active cases. 262 of the patients are hospitalized.
