Maldives records 6th COVID-19 death within 24 hours

A COVID-19 patient taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) passed away in the early hours of this Friday, marking the sixth COVID-19 related death in Maldives over the last 24 hours.

The deceased is an elderly Maldivian female who was brought to the IGMH’s Emergency Room. She was confirmed as a COVID-19 patient after she was tested following her death.

This death marks the sixth COVID-19 death in Maldives over the last 24 hours, following the death of two patients in Lh. Naifaru, two patients admitted to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility, and an Indian tourist quarantined in AA. Rasdhoo.

The latest death increases Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll to 80.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks – both in the capital and in residential islands outside the capital.

Maldives has 33,368 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 703 new cases on Thursday. The figure includes 526 cases from the greater Male’ region, 167 cases from residential islands outside the capital.

The surge in cases has prompted authorities to tighten restrictions in the capital and in five residential islands outside the capital battling outbreaks.
