Home Minister: Foreign expertise will be sought, investigation of utmost priority

The Home Minister of the Maldives Imran Abdulla has stated that the investigation into the attack on the former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed is of the utmost priority to the police.

Speaker Nasheed was wounded after an explosion near his residence of G. Kenereege earlier tonight. Nasheed is being treated at the ADK Hospital for his injuries. The Hospital has stated that Nasheed’s condition is stable now. 

Minister Imran Abdulla stated to Sun tonight that Nasheed had wounds on his body due to the explosion but had no life-threatening injuries. 

Minister Imran condemned the attack before describing it as an inhumane act of cowardice. Minister condemned the fact that leaders of the state were being targeted with such attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. 

He further stated that Police were making the investigation into the attack a priority and that those who were behind the attack would be found and brought to face justice.

“We will work with friendly nations and their assistance. We will find those behind this attack and bring to face justice,” said Minister Imran.

Minister Imran said that based on the incident, Police and MNDF will take enhanced measures regarding public safety.
