Opposition condemns attack against Speaker Nasheed, calls for swift investigation

Opposition coalition, composed of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has issued a statement condemning the attack against Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed, 53, was injured in an explosion outside his residence – G. Canaryge – located in Galolhu district of Male’ City on Thursday night. The explosion took place just as he exited his residence and entered his car.

Nasheed has been taken to the ADK Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

In a statement shortly after, the opposition coalition said they were shocked to hear news of the explosion targeting Nasheed, and prayed for his swift recovery.

“We call on all relevant State institutions to conduct a swift investigation to uncover the truth behind the attack targeting Speaker Nasheed as he entered his car outside his residence,” said the opposition coalition in their statement.

The opposition coalition also conveyed sympathy on behalf of opposition leader – former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the coalition’s leadership, council members, steering committee members, and general members.

They have called for the cuprits behind the attack to be punished to the full extent of the law.
